Laird Mckechnie (°1970, Auckland, New Zealand) is an artist who mainly works with photography. By applying abstraction, Mckechnie investigates the dynamics of landscape, and the limits of spectacle, based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations and conjure the realms of our imagination.

His photos establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. By exploring the concept of landscape and abstraction, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, light and balance, technical skills and rules of no digital manipulation for his abstract imagery.

His photos sometimes radiate cold and latent violence. At times, disconcerting beauty emerges.

Laird Mckechnie currently lives and works in Newton, Auckland.
